Turnip Cake (Lor Bak Gou)

Kung Hei Fat Choi!!! Turnip cake is a well-loved dim sum dish, served steamed or pan-fried throughout the year. Turnip cake is especially popular during Chinese New Year because the word cake ‘糕’ and ‘high’ in Cantonese are both pronounced as ‘gou’, making cakes a symbolic food of prosperity and fortune. So. Eat your cake.

If you’re wondering what turnip cake actually is, it is a savoury steamed cake made of rice flour and shredded turnips, with little pieces of Chinese sausage, mushroom and dried shrimp. The Ultimate Loaded Cookie

These chewy cookies are absolutely packed with all sorts of goodies, and though some may call them breakfast cookies, they are really anytime cookies, whether on-the-go or to savour with tea. Why I love them? The base is oats. The glue is crunchy nut butter. The sweetener is a whole banana and apple butter. And the filler are seeds, cacao and dried fruits. No sugar or oil added. Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip Protein Cookies

Looking for an excuse to have dessert for breakfast? Here’s a cookie recipe that will make a decadent indulgence guilt-free thanks to some protein powder and natural nut butter forming the bulk of the batter. I threw in some oats for healthy fibre and because I love the chewiness of them in my cookies. But, of course, you can easily reduce this or replace with coconut or almond flour if you want to go the extra low-carb mile. Almond Scones + Mashed Fig

Remember those Kraft snack packs with the cheese and crackers and red stick to spread it? Those were my faaavourite growing up… and let me tell you, it’s because of that stick.  The joy of being able to customize each bite carries over to my love of scones. The leisurely array of spreads brings me to sit back and just enjoy, perfect to savour during a break, or over tea with friends.

This recipeIMG_1517 is gluten-free and friendly for paleo diets as it uses almond flour in place of white flour. Of course, it imparts a nuttier, rich taste, and is higher in protein with healthy fats to be nutritiously filling. Almonds pair nicely with figs, so I grabbed a few, mashed it with a fork and made my own whole food spread.  Continue reading
